Commitment to Diversity
Design Diversity, Story Diversity & Editorial Representation
Design Diversity
As Design Editor, I work to make sure our designs are representative of the population at West. Going to school with a diverse population only furthers our necessity to be inclusive in our designs.
Source & Story Diversity
While I am not the final decider on stories, I do provide feedback into what we should cover in a publication cycle when needed. We want to make sure we cover important topics in both our community and the world while staying connected to West High. For example, we made sure to include a story on Sudan that related to the Sudanese student population at West High, while designing included source photos and non harmful representation of the subject. During Round 0 we are assigned to different groups to throw ideas at each person's assignment, adding new angles and perspectives to consider in the stories and designs we are creating. This is again done in Maestros, where we narrow down angles to what we want to cover and the sources they plan to interview.
Editorial Representation
Editorials are the primary way I contribute to giving all of the student body a voice in face of the administration at both Iowa City Community Schools District and West High School. From coverage about sexual assault victims to new policies in Iowa concerning the LGBTQIA+ community to issues with irresponsible use of handicap and staff parking, we use our voices to represent those of our school.
